Valencia is famous as the home of paella, but there are many other dishes and delicacies peculiar to this area of Spain. There's the traditional fisherman's dish of 'Llauna' of Calpe, with its ingredients of mixed fish, olive oil, garlic, parsley, red pepper, saffron, water and salt, and the simple grilled red mullet sprinkled with salt and olive oil with a few drops of lemon popular with the fisherman of Teulada/Moraira. Or how about trying the sweet pelotas that go with the meatballs in a Sunday stew or the Grandella, rice in fish stock or almond pie from Javea. Denia is home to 'arroz a banda', the king of rice and fish dishes while Benissa's traditional dishes include octopus stew. The Jalon Valley boasts it's mistela wines from it's award winning bodegas, plus several butchers who produce award-winning sausages. And the bakers get in on the act too with their unique sweet and savoury pasties.

Inland Areas

Riu Rau, Camino Riu Raus, Jalon - Tel 96 648 05 06. This lovely traditional Spanish restaurant offers local and regional cuisine cooked to a good standard. Good paella, local wines and home made desserts. There is a lovely open terrace for the summer season and cosy rustic feel inside - perfect for the cooler winter days. Try the Tapas selection comprising, albondigas (meatballs), croquetas, broad beans with bacon and pan aioli.

Salamanca, C/ Salamanca 59, Jalon - Tel 686 813 148 This English owned restaurant offers an extensive international menu including several vegetarian options. The food is of a good quality and the service friendly and efficient. Again, traditional atmosphere with rustic interior and a lovely outdoor courtyard for summer dining.

Casa Caty, Jalon Tel 660 832 638 Quaint restaurant with typical Spanish atmosphere offering well priced and varied menu.

La Risa, Jalon - This very popular bar/café offers good food at reasonable prices including an excellent value menu del dia. The staff are really friendly and the relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of a Belgian Patisserie. A great choice for breakfast or brunch, or afternoon tea when freshly made cakes or crepes are the order of the day.

Verd i Vent Restaurant, Ctra. Jalon a Bernia, Km. 5 (Ptda. Maserof) Tel 965 973 413 - This picturesque restaurant beautifully situated in the Sierra Bernia has been converted from ancient farm buildings. It is reached by a lovely mountain drive from Jalon. Traditional Spanish country food with a twist of Northern European cuisine. Serving a multiple course set meal of great food and wine at a reasonable price.  Despite its remote location, booking is strongly recommended as it is usually full all year round.

La Tasca Restaurant, Ctra Benidorm s/n, Parcent Tel 96 640 5059 - Lovely traditional Spanish restaurant with a varied rustic Spanish menu to suit all pallettes.

Restaurante La Piscina, Parcent Tel 96 640 51 26. This local restaurant set in a quiet location on the road out of Parcent towards the Coll de Rates offers some wonderful regional dishes including paella, wild boar, rabbit stew, freshly caught and beautifully prepared fish. Very popular with the locals and in summer you can eat outside under a canopy of pine trees. Excellent menu del dia and good prices. Pizza also available.

Castellvi Restaurante, Alcalali Tel 966 482 481 - A popular local restaurant located in Alcalali offering regional specialties and good meat and fish dishes. Live music on Fridays and Saturdays and sometimes, live Flamenco dancing.

Restaurante Pepe, Ptda La Solana, Alcalali Tel 966 482 456 - a very popular restaurant offering international and regional cuisine. The portions are generous, the atmosphere is lively and service is good.

Bar Porche, Alcalali Tel 96 648 21 23 - A friendly local bar offering authentic tapas as well as regional main dishes. Very popular in the evenings.

Bar/Restaurant La Torre, Alcalali  Extremely friendly bar/restaurant, popular with locals and expats alike. The food is excellent value, especially the menu del dia.

El Nou Portet, Orba Tel 966 405 360   Situated a few km outside Orba on the CV-715 towards Jalon and Alcalali. Adventurous food with excellent menu del dia, highly recommended and offers innovative Mediterranean cuisine, good wines and a very warm welcome

Al Zaraq, Benisa/Calpe, Carretera N332 - 965 731 615 -  Lebanese cuisine with prices from 35 Euros per head.

El Charro - 96 284 63 64 Calle V4, Denia - a good place to sample local freshly caught fish and rich sausages and meat products

Latitude Restaurant and Lounge, Marina de Denia Tel 965783235 - modern mediterranean, Thai, Indian and Oriental cuisine with an average price of 20 Euros. In a quiet location, this contemporary styled restaurant offers live music on selected nights and is open from Monday to Sunday all day until midnight.

As de Oros 96 284 02 39 Paseo Maritime Neputuno 26 - Diners come from far and wide for this restaurant's menu of fish and seafood.

The Olive Tree, Moraira - an excellent restaurant offering international cuisine located on the coast road to Moraira. This very elegant and contemporary styled restaurant offers an excellent and friendly service and the quality of the food is very high.  Good selection of wines available and 2 courses available from 22 Euros.
